Murphey founded WESTFEST® in 1986 when asked by Colorado's Copper Mountain Resort to create a festival capturing the spirt of the people of the American West. He answered the challenge by creating was an exciting exhibition, complete with cutting edge music of the American West from the Pop, Country, Western, Jazz, Folk and Classical and Native American genres, Western poets, and quality artwork of Western artists, sculptors and crafters, designer contemporary American Western clothing and jewelry, expert entrepreneurs of authentic and vintage Old West and Native American artifacts, and authentic American West Cuisine inspired by Pioneers, Native Americans, Mountain and Prairie Adventurers and Latino cultures. The world-shaking success of Westfest allowed Murphey to create a series of “Cowboy Songs” albums, making him the first Singing Cowboy since Marty Robbins to obtain Gold Record status in Western Music.
"WestFest® is a Holy Grail to me," Murphey said. "It's a celebration of the art, music and cultures of the Old and New American West. It’s a free-wheeling party for people who love the Western Lifestyle !"
While it's correct to describe the event as a "cultural celebration, Murphey’s American WestFest®" is, more than anything else, a concert/ dance and party where people can socialize, listen and dance to Country, Western and Native American music, and participate in activities and learning opportunities. A complete list of entertainment will be announced soon; Artists who have performed at the event in the past include celebrated recording artists such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Toby Keith, Vince Gill, Suzy Boggus, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dixie Chicks, Brooks and Dunn, John Denver, Dwight Yoakum, Chris Ledoux, Clint Black, as well as award-winning Native American artists Carlos Nakai, Bill Miller and Robert Mirabal. Fine Western painters and sculptors who developed their careers at Westfest such as William Matthews, Amado Pena, Gary Roller, Gordon Snidow, Frank Howell, Doug Scott and Miguel Martinez.
Murphey continues, “The American West has become synonymous with dramatic fantasy, but it’s also real and relevant. If Hollywood trends are any indication, the movie and television screens are still alive with dramatic stories of Western heroes, villains and characters, such as “ The Revenant”, “Hostiles”, “The Ranch” and “Yellowstone. But beyond the compelling fantasies of entertainment, today’s Westerners are united in their quest for the freedom of the American West's mighty rivers, prairie and mountain landscapes. I want to showcase the Real American West- Past and Present."
Michael Martin Murphey is a genre-busting recording artist known for his smash Pop, Country, Bluegrass and Western hits including “Wildfire,” “Carolina In The Pines,” “Long Line of Love”, “What’s Forever For” and “Cowboy Logic,” among others. He is today's best-selling singer of American Cowboy Music. He’s also a real cowboy and rancher, spokesman for America’s Farmers and Ranchers, and awarded for his work by the U.S. Department of the Interior, American Farm Bureau and National Cowboy Western Heritage Museum.
